Tyson Stelzer Top 250 Australian Wines of 2024
Penfolds Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Baby Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. It is named after its original binning compartment at Magill cellars.
"Penfolds 'Baby Grange' is in fine form for the 2022 release. Its cellaring track record is outstanding and I think this release will age beautifully thanks to its classic structure and impressive fruit depth. It's all dark plum and berry with a sheen of mahogany, sweet oak spice, cigar lounge, milk chocolate, dried cranberry and pressed violets. Layered and filigreed with compact fine-grained tannins and a sense of grace and poise as it slowly sails off. It's a ripper." Dave Brookes
The 2022 Bin 389 is a blend of 51% cabernet sauvignon and 49% shiraz from premium vineyards in McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. The wine was matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads (36% new).
